American English IPA Course for Russian Speakers
Курс американской фонетики (IPA) для русскоговорящих
Built from the AmE-sounds.tsv ranking (1 = easiest → 35 = hardest), split into 22 lessons, each adding new sounds on top of everything already learned — the "plus-one" principle.
Как построены уроки
- Lessons 1–13: each adds 2 new consonants + 1 new vowel (Lesson 13 only has one consonant left, [ʍ], since the consonant list runs out).
- Lessons 14–22: all 25 consonants are already taught, so these add 1 new vowel per lesson until all 22 vowels are covered.
- Every example word uses only sounds already introduced by that lesson (with one flagged exception for [ʒ], which almost never occurs in simple words).
- Where the TSV ranked several sounds as tied (e.g. [ɛ], [i], [u] all rank 1), the order they're listed in the file was kept.
- 25 consonants + 22 vowels = 47 total sounds, all covered by Lesson 22.
Типичные трудности для русскоговорящих
| # | Проблема | Суть |
|---|---|---|
| A | Aspiration | English [p, t, k] are puffed with air ([pʰ], [tʰ], [kʰ]) at the start of a stressed syllable; Russian п, т, к are not — under-aspirating makes them sound like b, d, or g to English ears. |
| B | Final devoicing | Russian devoices word-final voiced consonants (год → [got]); English does not — "dog" and "dock" must stay distinct. |
| C | Dark vs. light L | Russian л is generally velarized ("dark") everywhere; English uses a light L before vowels (leaf) and a dark L (ɫ) elsewhere (feel, milk). |
| D | r-quality | Russian р is tapped/trilled with tongue contact; American r has no contact at all — tongue bunches/curls in the middle of the mouth. |
| E | w vs v | Russian has no [w]; speakers default to [v], so "west" can sound like "vest." |
| F | θ / ð | No Russian equivalent at all — common substitutes are с/ф for θ and з/д for ð. Requires putting the tongue tip between the teeth. |
| G | Vowel reduction | Russian does reduce unstressed vowels (akanye) — this is actually a helpful bridge to English schwa, just applied far more often in English. |
